Most tanks last eight to twelve years. If yours is getting there, a little planning turns an emergency swap into a considered choice, and sometimes into a rebate.
What each program pays
| Rebate | Amount | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| CleanBC heat pump water heater (income-qualified) | Up to $3,500 | Replacing natural gas water heating; amount by income level; eligibility code before work starts |
| Northern BC heat pump water heater | Up to $1,000 | Replacing a gas water heater at or north of 100 Mile House |
| Gas tank or tankless, like-for-like | Generally none | No standard FortisBC rebate for existing customers in 2026 (confirm before relying) |
Better Homes BC shows the maximum; your amount depends on income level and changed on July 6, 2026. An Energy Coach (1-844-881-9790) can confirm it.
Choosing a replacement
Gas storage tank
A like-for-like tank is quick to install and keeps upfront cost down. Power-vented models add venting flexibility. There’s no standard rebate for this swap in 2026.
Tankless (on-demand) gas
Endless hot water for busy households and more floor space, with no tank to fail. It often needs new venting and a larger gas line. No standard rebate for existing gas customers right now.
Combi boiler
If you heat with a boiler, a combi unit can handle space heating and hot water in one appliance, freeing the space a tank used to take.
Heat pump water heater
It pulls warmth from the air around the tank and moves it into the water. It wants space, airflow and a drain, so basements, garages and utility rooms work best. It’s the type the current CleanBC and Northern rebates are built around.
Practical checks
- Venting: condensing and tankless models usually need different venting than an old tank.
- Gas supply: on-demand heaters may need a bigger gas line.
- Drainage and space: heat pump and condensing units produce condensate and need a drain.
- Permits: any gas work needs a licensed gas fitter and a TSBC permit.
- Qualifying list: confirm the exact model qualifies before you order it.
How HeatLand helps with the water heater rebate
HeatLand’s technicians are brand-agnostic, so the advice on the water heater rebate isn’t tied to selling one product. We start with what you have now, how old it is and what you want it to do, then tell you honestly whether a rebate fits, including when the answer is no or when waiting a year makes more sense.
If you go ahead, HeatLand provides a free, no-obligation estimate for qualifying equipment, helps with the CleanBC and utility paperwork, and explains how to confirm any contractor’s listing on the HPCN directory. Call or text (604) 330-3812, or email info@heatland.ca.
